About Us

What is Effective Altruism?

Effective altruism is about recognizing the importance of using our lives to do the most good we can and looking for ways to help others that are high-impact and well-supported by evidence.

A great way to start learning about this perspective is to have a look through this introduction to effective altruism and watch Will MacAskill's TED talk below.

What is EA NYC?

Effective Altruism New York City is the main hub for the EA community in The Big Apple. Our goal is to ensure that every member of the EA NYC community feels empowered to do the most good they can by fostering an accessible, inspiring, and productive community. We host weekly events, including reading and discussion groups, socials and networking meetings, and speaker presentations that bring in incredible leaders from around the world to share their experiences fighting global poverty, reducing the suffering of animals, safeguarding the long-term future, and much more. We also curate a monthly newsletter that helps New Yorkers find meaningful career opportunities, stay apprised of the latest developments in the larger EA community, and access opportunities for grants, fellowships, and more. Together, we’re helping each other positively impact society. You can reach out to us at info@effectivealtruism.nyc

Meet the Team

Our staff is funded by the Centre for Effective Altruism’s Community Building Grants, to support and build the effective altruism community in NYC.

Chris Corliss, Volunteer Board Member

Chris Corliss began co-organizing the group in 2015 and has the great distinction of having run all of our events out of his living room at one point in time. He works in financial software.

Jacob Eliosoff, Volunteer Board Member

Jacob Eliosoff's favorite things about EA are the head-scratchers (selfish spending, wild animal suffering, ...) and the EA NYC community. He works in cryptocurrencies, which he loves less.

Rockwell Schwartz, Director

Rocky Schwartz first became interested in Effective Altruism as a college philosophy minor and animal rights activist. She has spent the past eight years working on animal welfare, most recently as COO of an EA-aligned nonprofit startup. Rocky spends her downtime rescuing and caring for animals, reading webtoons, and eating too many vegan pastries.
